Domestic Abuse

Washington State takes the subject of Domestic Violence or abuse very seriously.  The system is set up for unrepresented parties to file for protection orders to protect themselves or their children.  If the matter is urgent and dangerous call 911 and a criminal no contact order will be put in place and charges may be filed.  If the abuse is not life threatening and time is not of the essence, a civil protection order or anti-harassment order may be the prudent course of action.

In any event, if domestic violence is alleged, a temporary order separating the alleged aggressor from the alleged victim is available.  It will usually last for two weeks to allow the situation to cool off and give the accused party the opportunity to respond.  Being accused of domestic abuse or violence may result in serious consequences in a divorce action.  Experienced representation may be needed to avoid or minimize these consequences.  In short, you may need help to assist the court at getting to the truth.
